What Thanksgiving is all about
What does Thanksgiving mean to you? For lots of people, Thanksgiving is just another excuse to eat lots of food and watch good football. Thanksgiving is really a time to give thanks for all of the blessings in your life.
Everyone has different perspectives on the November holiday, whether their favorite parts are turkey, football, stuffing, or pumpkin pie.
“When I think of Thanksgiving, the first thing that comes to mind is my grandma’s famous, homemade apple stuffing,” said Morgan Bair.
“I always think about sitting on the La-Z-Boy in my living room watching some good football with some really good food,” said Brandon Roberts.
Thanksgiving is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November. It all started as a day of giving thanks for the blessing of the harvest and of the upcoming year.
The “First Thanksgiving” was celebrated by the Pilgrims after their first harvest in the New World in October 1621. It lasted three days. Ninety Native Americans and fifty-three Pilgrims. Colonists regularly celebrated “thanksgivings” as days of prayer thanking God for blessings like a military victory or the end of a drought.
Thanksgiving is a day to spend quality time with family and friends, and thank them for all the wonderful things they do for you in your life. It is a day to celebrate all of the priceless things that family and friends get to experience together.
This year, take a minute to think about what you are grateful for, and maybe even share with the whole dinner table. If you are lucky, you will not be the only one to share. Happy Thanksgiving!
