Starbucks’ Pumpkin Spice Latte wins taste test

Throughout this week, I have made it my mission to find the best Pumpkin Spice Latte there is. After traveling to New Grounds, Starbucks, and Panera, I have come to a conclusion- classic is better than new. The Starbucks classic Pumpkin Spice is the way to go this season. With an almost perfect rating, Starbucks has yet again won the competition between its fellow coffee shops.

New Grounds Cafe is known for its assortment of drinks, especially the Frozen Buckeye Latte. But with the fall season, comes an old favorite with a twist;the Pumpkin Pie Latte is now at New Grounds. The frozen latte with whipped cream and pumpkin sauce on top was the perfect combination of spices and coffee.  I, for one, am a huge coffee drinker, and don’t mind the taste of black coffee. Even if you’re not like me, you can still enjoy this festive beverage. The taste of actual coffee is not distinct in the Pumpkin Pie drink, but is included for that extra boost of caffeine. Priced at $5.00 it’s not the cheapest out of the three but it’s worth the extra buck. If you’re looking for a new version of the Pumpkin Spice latte, New Grounds is the place to go. It’s not my absolute favorite drink, but I rate it a solid 7 out of 10.

Panera, the place of clean eating and delicious bagels, is now introducing their Pumpkin Spice Latte. Made with foamed milk, espresso and pumpkin spice, it has a similar taste to the rest of the Pumpkin Spice Lattes out there, topped with whipped cream and caramel sauce. However, the Panera version of the beverage is slightly disappointing. It has a slightly duller flavor, and clumps of spices at the bottom of the cup. This drink had a less than appealing taste. At $4.09+ tax a cup, I rate it a 5 out of 10 for the obvious reasons, as well as the slow service and overall unappealing texture.

The classic Pumpkin Spice Latte can only be found at the top coffee shop in the world. Of course, I’m talking about Starbucks. This top competitor has been around for quite a while, and their Pumpkin Spice Latte is only available for the fall season, like most others. This drink can be ordered hot or frozen, but my preference is frozen. Mixed with milk, coffee and ice, this Pumpkin Spice is perfect for the warm fall weather. Topped with whipped cream and pumpkin pie spice, the Starbucks rendition of the Pumpkin Spice Latte is always the best and classic choice. I give it a 9 out of 10 for its delicious taste and reasonable price of $4.45+ tax for a grande, or medium.

After trying the different Pumpkin Spice Lattes from New Grounds, Panera and Starbucks there’s not doubt in my mind that original is always better than new. The classic taste of pumpkin spice mixed with coffee was made famous by Starbucks and should stay that way. New Grounds is a close second though. With a slight twist and a new name of Pumpkin Pie Latte, New Grounds as successfully created its own version of the popular drink. Finally, in last place is Panera. With its unappealing taste and strange texture, the Panera Pumpkin Spice Latte is not one that I would recommend. Overall, Pumpkin Spice Lattes are one of my favorite things to drink this season so, finding the perfect combination is extremely important when it comes to choosing where to buy it from.
