Scary movies to watch on Halloween

Halloween is just around the corner, and while most are too old to be going out and begging for candy, but that does not mean we can not celebrate. Here are a few horror movies to get you into the spirit of Halloween. Please refer to the parent’s guide online for each of these films if you are unsure how comfortable you are with watching it.

 

LAVENDER (2016)

PERSONAL RATING: 7/10

  Lavender is just the right horror movie for light hearted individuals. It doesn’t have much gore or disturbing scenes, just a creepy feel. The story follows a young woman that loses her memory after an accident and starts to see strange images after visiting her family home. This film leaves you haunted with how scary human beings are themselves.

 

CARRIE (1976)

PERSONAL RATING: 6/10

  Carrie is a classic horror movie. Not too much gore or frightening scenes, this movie is an adaption of Stephen King’s novel of the same name. Carrie is a high school girl with an extremely religious mother and is often the victim of bullying. Everything changes when she starts to realize she has supernatural powers. This movie gives off a nice nostalgic feel. There is also a 2013 remake of this movie starring Chloe Grace Moretz.

 

CORALINE(2009)

PERSONAL RATING: 9/10

  Coraline is a stop motion Tim Burton film. Coraline, an imaginative young girl,  moves into a new house. Not satisfied with her dull life, she one day discovers a small secret door in the house. On the other side of it, all seems too good to be true. This film is just the movie for animation lovers.

 

PAN’S LABYRINTH (2006)

PERSONAL RATING: 6/10

  Pan’s Labyrinth takes place during the Spanish civil war. A bookworm little girl goes to live with her new father with her mother. Shortly after moving, she meets a mystical creature that tells her to go on to do various tasks to prove herself as the princess of the underworld. This film is perfect for those who love fantasy. Includes some frightening scenes, but other than that it’s not too scary.

 

THE BABADOOK (2014)

PERSONAL RATING: 6/10

  The Babadook focuses on a widow and her child. One day her child asks her to read him a strange book to him, causing very strange events start to happen. The Babadook does not have any jump scares but does the job with very frightening scenes and disturbing imagery. A great film for ones who love psychological thrillers

 

THE SILENCED (2015)

PERSONAL RATING 7/10

  The Silenced is a South Korean horror film taking place during the Japanese occupation, where a sickly young girl goes to a girl’s boarding school meant to improve health. During her stay, she starts to notice that her classmates have been disappearing one-by-one. The Silenced is a haunting film with a very deep story. The film does have disturbing scenes and jump scares. A must see for any horror fan.
