Intramural Basketball Preview: Everything you need to know
Last season, the annual Darby Intramural Basketball Tournament ended in an upset. Two time defending champion BAM fell to up and comer YermTeam, in perhaps the biggest upset in tournament history.
The Darby Intramural Basketball League is basically a two month tournament where students can play on teams of their choice. Teams can have up to ten players and can be made up of any arrangement of students, if they are in good academic standing. Games are typically played on Saturday’s after winter break, with teams playing as many as three games a day. The end of the season consists of a bracket play tournament with the final games being played on the hardwood in the main gym. This season many teams seem to sense an opportunity and are looking to put their names into the record books.
One such team looking for a chance at glory this season is the always entertaining Brick Squad Hoops. Brick Squad returns this season with a solid core of players who were bounced from the tournament by BAM last season.
Senior captain Jackson DeWolfe gave his outlook for the team this season, “Last year was extremely disappointing, especially for what we accomplished our sophomore season. But we’ve put last year behind us. This season, you can expect a lot more heart, passion, and competitiveness from us.”
Brick Squad’s Sophomore year consisted of a trip to the final four; they will look to get back there this season. Other players expected to return for Brick Squad this season are seniors Noah Adams, Brandon Roberts, Luke Lassiter, and Andre Arman.
Another team to keep an eye on this season is Team TBD, the notorious rival of Brick Squad. A solid team with depth at every position, Team TBD is in a position to make a run at the title this year. They are led by a strong lineup featuring seniors Mike Binion, Connor Rowe, Logan Slubowski, Codey Wendel, and Tyler Wolf. Last season, Team TBD had a strong performance in the tournament, making it all the way to the final four; they will be looking to build off of that success this season.
One last team to monitor this year are the Patel Brothers. This junior squad is built comparably to BAM who dominated the league over the past few seasons. The Patel Brothers feature a stacked lineup of former Darby basketball players and overall good athletes. Their starting lineup should look quite intimidating to most teams as they feature juniors Andrew Patrick, Paxton Schwandt, Alex Cannon, Jake Swartzmiller, and Connor Jones. Overall this squad has a really good chance at dethroning YermTeam as this year’s intramural champions .
All three of these lineups feature great athletes and should have a great chance at making a run at the championship this season. It remains to be seen though if any of these teams will be able to defeat the team who conquered the tournament Goliath.
