Grammy Nominations for the Year of 2017

The nominations for The Grammy’s, the most hyped music award show that is held every January, were recently announced. However, the 2017 awards are going to be different than any other. For the first time in Grammy history, there is no white male nominee for album of the year. The nominees are Childish Gambino, Jay-Z, Kendrick Lamar, Lorde, and Bruno Mars.

Some big artists have been snubbed for this year. One Direction alumni Harry Styles and Niall Horan quickly hit the charts with their singles after going solo. Surprisingly, neither of them have been nominated for any Grammy categories this year. Another world renowned artist, Ed Sheeran, has been snubbed for some big categories as well. Other than being nominated for Best Pop Solo Performance and Best Pop Vocal Album, Sheeran has not been nominated for any big categories. While most of his fans are outraged, Ed Sheeran himself does not seem very affected by it.

For best new artist, Alessia Cara has made her great breakthrough this year by featuring in Zedd’s Stay and Logic’s 1-800-273-8255. Alessia had already became a public face during 2016 by releasing her own songs and being featured in Disney’s Moana by singing Where I’ll Go during the credits. Lil Uzi Vert has also gained some public admiration this year by releasing his hit single XO TOUR Llif3 and going on tour.

There has been some speculation on how the nominees for album of the year have to do with the nominees for the same category in the 2016 Grammy’s. Beyoncé, along with other black artists, got snubbed for multiple categories the previous year. When Adele had received the award, she herself questioned the authenticity of her achievements. I personally believe that this is not the case, it’s just a coincidence that none of the 2017 nominees are white men.

While winning a Grammy is a great achievement, it does not define how talented an artist is. Whether your favorite artist was nominated for the Grammy’s or not, supporting them by buying their songs is just as rewarding to them. Make sure to tune into the Grammy’s on January 28th.
