Girls Varsity Soccer beats Dublin Scioto
The Girls Varsity Soccer team put on a good game against Dublin Scioto on Tuesday, September 12th. Despite the pouring rain, the girls still managed to win,1-0.
Darby had good defense and there was aggressive play on both sides. There was close offensive play by Darby. Both goalkeepers, Junior Emily Schneck and Senior Gillian Tinney, did a good job of tending to the goal. In the first 30 seconds of the game an impressive give and go was played by Junior defense Cassidy Webber and Senior midfielder Blair Cowan. Soon afterwards Dublin got the ball and ran it down the field ready to shoot it, but Junior defense Natalie Brown quickly caught up and saved it before Dublin could kick it in. Five minutes in, Junior forward Kaitlin Spencer shot the only goal of the game. The score would remain the same for the rest of the game.
Assistant soccer coach Lauren Hall shared how tough she thought the game would be.
“Based on previous years I expected us to pull out a win,” Hall said, “We have a lot of girls that are injured or sick so I knew it would be a tougher game than it should’ve been.”
After the first half the both teams played better on both defense and offense with many attempts to shoot the ball, but to no avail. Hall described how the team practices have prepared the girls for this game.
“We do well passing the ball until the last 20 yards and then we launch the ball, so we’ve been working a lot on finishing and our efficiencies with passing, especially in the midfield and forward positions,” Hall explained.
Overall the girls were happy with the win. Senior team captain Blair Cowan predicts the rest of the season will go well.
“My expectations for the rest of the season are to continue to grow as a group and keep getting the result,” said Cowan.
The girls varsity team plays Dublin Jerome on Tuesday, September 19th at home.
