Girls Basketball defeats rival
The Girls Junior Varsity basketball team took a big win at home against the Hilliard Bradley Jaguars on Thursday, January 11th. The Panthers capitalized after a successful one game road trip, coming home to try and spark a new winning streak in a fierce rivalry.
It was a back and forth game, with numerous tied scores and lead changes as late as the final two minutes. The Panthers seemed to have the slight edge the whole game after a big run in the first half, but nonetheless found themselves down by one in the final two minutes against an older, more experienced Bradley team.
However, after a previous few misses, sharpshooting Freshman Ashley Derenzo kept her composure and hit a go-ahead three pointer. The Panthers would hold on to that lead the rest of the game, as Derenzo secured the win with a fastbreak layup off a feed from Freshman Kelsey Binion, making the final score 25-21. The Panthers redeemed themselves from a loss earlier in the season to the Jaguars with this victory.
Darby’s defense was smothering in this match, as the girls never allowed Bradley to score more than six points in a quarter.
Binion, one of Darby’s athletic perimeter defenders, explained how the Panthers were able to achieve this.
“We all talked it up and made sure we played our best,” Binion said, “I think we all worked really hard, and we played for each other rather than playing for ourselves.”
Other bright spots on defense included Freshman Abby Baumann, who has been locking down the post for the Panthers recently, and the quick Freshman guard Caroline Turner, who has been a nuisance for opponents on the perimeter, consistently swiping and poking balls loose.
The Panthers hope this success carries over into the coming weeks. They play at Dublin Scioto on Tuesday, January 23rd.
