Darby Girls Track take home the win at their home opener
On Friday, April 6th the Hilliard Darby Varsity Girls Track and Field team competed in their home opener at the annual Panther Invitational. Not only did the girls take home the overall team win, they won with a 33 point gap between them and the runner-up, Hilliard Davidson. Hilliard Bradley, Westerville South, Upper Arlington, Dublin Jerome, Olentangy, and Olentangy Orange also competed in the meet.
The Panthers individual event and relay victories helped lead to the team win.
In High Jump, Darby earned fourteen points thanks to the efforts of Junior Stacia Rispress and Sophomore Naomi Walters who jumped 5 feet, 2 inches and 4 feet 10 inches, respectively.
Sophomore thrower Emma Kowalski won first place in both Shot Put and Discus Throw. Kowalski threw 37 feet 8 inches in Shot Put and 133m in Discus.
The Panther Long Jumpers dominated the event, with Junior Maliyah Ellis’s first place jump of 16 feet 11 inches and Walter’s second place jump of 16 feet 9 inches.
Rispress and Walters contributed more points to the Panther’s total after Rispress ran a 13.00 second 100 Meter Dash, and Walters ran a 13.01 in the same event, earning third and fourth place, respectively.
In the 100 Meter Hurdles Ellis won first place with a run of 16.18 seconds, and Freshman Gabrielle Hammonds placed fourth with a time of 16.48 seconds.
Junior Aliyah Brletic ran a 1:03.24 in the 400 meter dash, scoring the Panthers two points in fifth place, and Sophomore Jane Vulic also earned four points for Darby thanks to her 52.00 second 300 Meter Hurdles.
The Darby girls distance runners were able to add 23 points to the team’s total thanks to a fourth place 1600 Meter Run from Sophomore Daniella Santos, a first place 800 Meter Run from Senior Abby Cannon, a sixth place run in the 3200 Meter Run from Senior Anita Perie, and finally a second place 3200 Meter run from Santos.
Sophomore Zayna Hampton, Ellis, Brletic, and Senior Bethany Alecusan ran the 4×200 Meter Relay for a first place time of 1:51.81.
Hampton, Walters, Alecusan, and Rispress worked together to earn Darby eight points after their second place finish in the 4×100 Meter Relay.
In the 4×400 Meter Relay Hampton, Brletic, Cannon, and Vulic placed second after their time of 4:20.34.
Ellis and Rispress were both pleased with the overall team performance on Friday.
“I think the team performed really well Friday! We all tried our best and it showed!” shared Ellis.
The team has high standards after coming back from their back to back OCC Championships in the 2016 and 2017 seasons.
Rispress shared that the team is looking to win their third OCC’s in a row, as well as some personal goals.
“I want to make it to states in high jump and hopefully place,” Rispress expressed.
