Daniella Santos represents at cross country states
Daniella Santos, the only Darby runner to qualify for states, had impressive finishing times throughout the entire season. Last Saturday, November 4th, was the cross country state finals meet. Over 1,000 high schoolers competed between schools that are division I, II, and III. Morgan Gigandet, a senior from Troy High School became the state champion in the women’s division I 5k event, with the other competitors that finished in the top twenty becoming All State runners.
After having a fantastic Sophomore season Daniella Santos qualified for states without a team. She had to finish in the top ten at regionals in order to be able to qualify as an individual, and she finished eighth. During the season Santos finished first at four meets, and in the top five six times. Even though nobody else on the cross country team qualified for states, many Darby runners were there to support her.
Santos was excited to get the chance to represent Darby in the biggest meet of the season.
“I was a little nervous running without my team, but I was also pretty excited to be able
to race at the state meet,” said Santos.
Santos started off the race strong but finished in 28th out of 173 with a time of 18.36. Although she missed the podium Santos finished off with an impressive race at the state championship.
“I for the most part achieved all the goals that I wanted to, the only goal that I didn’t meet was wanting to [get to the] podium at states,” exclaimed Santos, “I was a little short of that, but I will just continue to train, listen to my coaches, and just work hard so that I can come back next year and place even higher in the state meet.”
Daniella Santos has high goals for herself next season, and something to motivate her in the offseason.
