Boy’s volleyball on their way to state tournament
In the lead-up to the much anticipated state tournament, Darby men’s volleyball has reached the coveted number one state ranking. The Darby Panthers were able to surpass Cincinnati Elder after beating them handily by a score of three sets to none.
The Elder game was a “Code Blue” affair for Darby, and all students were encouraged to come. This brought a large, loud, and energetic student section to the game, who were treated to watching the Darby volleyball squad take down the number one team in the state. Hilliard received a lot of strong play from star seniors Robert Bowling and Brad Brinkerhoff. Darby capped off the match with a big comeback in the final set, winning it 26 to 24, to complete the shutout. The final rally was nothing short of exhilarating, with fans clapping and hollering along side every Darby point.
Cincinnati Elder is not the first highly ranked team to come into Darby’s gym and leave disappointed. Along Darby’s road to secure the #1 state ranking, the Hilliard Panthers defeated talented teams such as #5 in the state Westerville South, and #4 in the state Archbishop Moeller. Darby defeated both of those teams by a score of 3-0 as well.
Now this #1 Darby team will be gearing for the state tournament, a competitive round of match ups against some of the top-tier volleyball programs in Ohio. Their first game of the tournament will be this Friday, on May 19th. Darby will be hoping to replicate the magic they had in 2013 and 2015, when they won the state championship. Senior libero Logan Mills described the emotions of playing in the state tournament.
“We’re going to take this one point at a time and we will be mentally focused every game,” Mills said.
The stakes are obviously very high for this upcoming tournament. It will be very exciting to see how it all plays out as the Darby Panthers battle for the trophy.
