Basketball Starts the Season Undefeated
Darby’s basketball is ready to go after seizing some wins and a lot momentum going into the season. This year should be much different than last year’s team. The Varsity men’s team has seven seniors: Brice Stultz, Jake Hamilton, Chandler Barlow, Ben Gbur, Jack Gearhiser, Colton Wood, and Josh Govine. Darby has not had this many seniors since the 2012-2013 season. That season stands out because it is the last time Darby has had a winning season. Darby has fallen into a slump in recent years but Senior Guard Jake Hamilton thinks that this season can go differently.
“I think we’re going to surprise a lot of people this year,” Hamilton said, “A lot of people are doubting us and I think we can prove them wrong this year.”
They won against Marysville at Darby on Thursday. This game had been decided by three points the last three years, and that streak continued as the Panthers won with a close score of 63-60.
The girls team on the other hand is looking to improve on an impressive season last year. Even though the team has lost a lot of players from last year, this team still has what it takes to make a playoff run. Junior Annie Rauch agrees.
“Our expectations are set high, one of our goals is to win the OCC’s and make a run in the playoffs,” Rauch said.
The 93-31 win against Franklin Heights Tuesday night was a great way to set the tone for the season and a nice confidence boost heading into the away game against Bradley. The men’s team is also away against Central Crossing at seven.
